MEET YOUR TRAINOR
I’m Deborah Hediger (Deb), I have extensive experience as a Mental Health Nurse, Counsellor, Clinical educator, University tutor and trainer. I have a down to earth and practical approach to helping people navigate the difficulties of living with anxiety, depression, stress, grief, and trauma. I use this approach as a trainer and educator in delivering Mental Health First Aid courses to members of the public and organisations.
Mental health impacts just about everyone and one of the most common things people are concerned about, is knowing what to say or do that will be helpful to someone experiencing a mental health crisis. Completing a Mental Health First Aid course will definitely answer some of those concerns.
I’m scared of being judged or that people will think I’m crazy if I go to counselling…
Many people feel the same way about counselling, especially if you’ve never been before. I understand that counselling can be an anxiety provoking experience in itself, and I work with you at your pace, without judgement. I provide a safe space where you can talk about your concerns and together we’ll find solutions that work for you.
How many sessions will I need?
Everyone is unique, with their own experiences which make it very hard to say how many sessions you will need. I use a solution-focused and goal-directed approach which means that I work with you to develop solutions that are relevant and realistic for you.
What happens in sessions?
- Sessions are usually an hour long. At your first session I will go through a few house-keeping issues relating to confidentiality, and consent.
- I will spend time asking you questions to give me some foundation understanding of the problem.
- At the end of the first session, we’ll discuss how to proceed and by then will have a rough idea of how many sessions will work for you.
Do I need a referral to come to counselling?
No. people can self-refer for counselling.
Does Transitions Therapy provide crisis support?
No, I don’t. If you need support outside of my office hours, please consider contacting one of the Mental Health resources listed below.
Will my private health fund or Medicare cover my sessions?
- Several private health funds offer cover for counselling. The amount you receive back from them will depend on your level of cover. (see the funds listed below to see if yours is shown).
- I am a Mental Health Nurse which means that unlike most counsellors, I can provide Medicare rebates (5 visits) for those clients with a Chronic Disease Management plan from their GP.
